If you say that a woman wearing revealing clothes deserves to be sexually assaulted, you are saying that a woman’s body is inherently deserving of rape. That women are inherently deserving of rape. That women have to make sure their body is hidden in order not to deserve to be raped. That is misogyny in its purest form.
I need to find a way to tell this to some people I know.
Because I’m still being told that this is a two-way street. IN 2013, FOR FUCK’S SAKE.
I try to explain this to people all the time, that by saying that it’s clothing or looks or etc, you’re tying rape prevention to avoiding being attractive to men, and besides that it’s not on the victim to control what another human being chooses to do to them, it’s also ridiculous because there are so many men out there with so many things they’re attracted to. Some like women in skirts, some like women in pants, some like tall women, some like short women, some like women with small butts, some like women with big butts. There are a lot of creepy dudes who have harassed or attempted to assault me because I’m Asian, so what, I should like wear a mask? Wear a giant hood over my head so I don’t trigger anybody’s Asian fetish? It’s f-ing ridiculous to put the onus on us to mindread every man’s desires and work around them. Rape isn’t about attraction, rape is about somebody deciding that what they want (sometimes it’s attraction to us, sometimes it’s punishment, sometimes it’s anger, etc) overrides what WE want, and OUR rights to our body and safety. That’s why people say it’s about entitlement, power, and control, it’s about forcing your will on somebody else because all that matters is what you want from their body.
